Natural Remedies for Colds + Flu

I hate to admit it but I have been feeling under the weather these past couple of weeks. Maybe it’s the sudden change of temperature, stubborn allergies or what seems to be a cold epidemic, but my nose has been running nonstop and I have a nasty cough.

Since I am a wellness warrior, I take getting sick so personally! I feel like I should NEVER get sick. It is SO frustrating especially because I eat all my greens, take vitamins, breathe deeply, process emotions and have nurturing relationships. So what gives?!!

I can run myself in circles trying to figure out the why’s of this cold but instead I want to focus on things to do when the cold or flu strikes. I am not a big fan of antibiotics or the flu shot so I try to heal myself in more natural approaches. Here is a list of my top 10 ways to fight back against boogers, sore throats and nasty fevers!

Echinacea – This herb boosts the immune system and reduces many of the symptoms of colds and other illnesses, infections and conditions. I squirt the prescribed droplets into fresh water and drink up.

Zinc – When taken within one day of symptoms, zinc can reduce the duration of your cold and the severity of symptoms. I usually buy the organic lozenges which taste great and help soothe sore throats too.

Camu camu – This superfruit berry provides 30-50x more Vitamin C than oranges! It is anti-inflammatory and an immune system supporter. It usually comes in a powder form and great to add into a superfood smoothie.

Rest – Maybe the most obvious but sometimes hardest to do! When feeling sick, the body needs time and energy to fight off germs and heal. The duration of sickness can be greatly reduced when you really stop and rest.

Silver – I just recently learned about the medicinal power of silver…especially effective during the early stages of the virus as well as having a high bactericidal and fungicidal activity. I add it into my fresh juice or even a fresh droplets in filtered water.

Ginger – Ginger root helps soothe sore throats, reduce inflammation and clears congestion. Best to grate fresh ginger in hot water and drink as a healing tea.

Honey – Honey is a natural antioxidant, with antibacterial and antiviral properties. It has a healing effect on coughs and upper respiratory infections. Just please make sure it is raw, sustainable sourced and harvested with compassion! And use sparingly because it does contain high amounts of sugar.

Garlic – This powerful antimicrobial kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. Ideally, fresh and raw is best to maximize it’s effectiveness. You can even throw it into a juicer or blender for a real intense kick!

Water – Drinking plenty of fresh, pure, filtered water is essential for optimal functioning of the body and even more important when you are sick. Proper hydration helps break up congestion while preventing dehydration.

Oregano Oil – Oregano oil is a potent anti-microbial and antiviral treatment. The taste is VERY intense so best to add to a juice or smoothie. I tried squirted a few drops and it burned my throat!

I hope this helps as we approach cold and flu season. Remember, the best defense is always doing your best to keep your body, mind and spirit healthy!
