Chlorella is my latest superfood obsession and favorite green treat. But don’t be fooled by it’s microscopic size. This single-cell, water-grown green algae is spherical in shape, emerald in color, tiny in diameter but extremely powerful. Like many plants, it uses photosynthesis to reproduce and thus contains a tremendous amount of chlorophyll, more than any other plant in the world. It actually has 40 times higher levels of chlorophyll than wheatgrass!
Now I know the thought of consuming algae may sound unappetizing but the amount of benefits this small plant has is undeniable. Here are my top 4 reasons why this has become a recent staple in my diet:
1 – NUTRIENTS. Chlorella is a whole food. It is one of the highest sources of complete, pure, digestible protein (about 45-60%), far exceeding that of ANY animal product. Chlorella is also rich in vitamins (A, C, E, B vitamins), minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and a slue of other incredible bio-available nutrients, especially iron and calcium. It also contains RNAs and DNAs (the building blocks of life!) not commonly present in plant foods.
2 – DETOX. Chlorella is a natural detoxification tool. When taken into your body, chlorella binds to heavy metals, chemicals, molds, radioactive particles and pesticides that accumulate in your digestive tract and ultimately end up in your body’s cells. Because it is both rich in chlorophyll and magnesium, it has the ability to drive out lead and mercury. BUT, chlorella is also uniquely crafted to NOT bind to the minerals your body requires to function, such as calcium and zinc. It has been also been observed to reduce dioxin, a toxic chemical, in breast milk.
3 – CHLOROPHYLL – Chlorophyll plays a critical role in human health as it closely resembles the hemoglobin (red blood cells) in our bodies and is effective at preventing anemia. Because of the high levels of this green magic, chlorella helps our bodies process more oxygen, purifies the blood and promotes optimal blood pressure. It boosts the immune system, slows the aging process, reduces cancer risk, and increases energy and concentration levels. Plus, it strengthens bones, teeth, gums and freshens breath!
4 – WEIGHT LOSS – Numerous studies have shown that because of chlorella’s detoxifying properties, it actually helps reduce body fat percentage, obesity and weight related diabetes. It also decreases both cholesterol and hypertension. Chlorella’s cleansing action on intestines and other elimination channels assures that waste gets efficiently carried away from the bowels, liver, and blood. This helps improve your digestion, especially if constipation is a problem.
Now before you go buying these small superfoods, be mindful that not all chlorella is created equal. Manufacturing processes vary from different sources so it is key you choose the right one.
Chlorella is actually completely indigestible to humans because we do not have the enzymes to break down its tough cell wall. But this cell wall is what is responsible for binding toxins inside your body! So both chewing and digesting chlorella will not release the powerful health benefits contained within this green algae. Therefore, when you purchase chlorella, be mindful to make sure it has a Broken Cell Wall. This is the ONLY form that allows your body to receive the benefits.
In addition, when choosing chlorella, it is important to verify that is is sourced in waters that are not contaminated. Chlorella is a natural green food and therefore is affected by polluted water, retaining environmental toxins. So be certain any chlorella supplement you buy comes from a naturally clean water source.
This is my favorite brand of chlorella.
Also, chlorella must be introduced gradually into the body so the digestive and intestinal systems can adapt. A popular trick to people use is to eat cilantro a few days prior to starting chlorella because cilantro also promotes a detoxification response in your body, but at a less intense level. This helps the body ease into a smoother detoxification response from chlorella. Try beginning with 3-6 grams but working up to 20-30 grams a day as both preventive and nourishing nutrition.
So what’s the best way to eat it? My favorite (because I am not a huge fan of the taste) is to ingest chlorella tablets. I take a handful each morning with warm water or green juice. My husband, on the other hand, loves the taste and he munches them as if they were skittles! Chlorella also comes in a powder form which can be added to shakes and superfood smoothies.
